What is a Fractional CMO? (And do You Need One?)

A fractional CMO is a senior marketing leader who works with your firm on a part-time or flexible basis, rather than as a full-time employee. An interim CMO does a similar job but for a fixed period, usually covering a gap until a permanent hire is found. Ruche’s retainers are led personally by one of our directors, giving firms that senior-level input without a separate hire.

Fractional and interim are two more terms that get used almost interchangeably in marketing, which doesn’t help anyone trying to work out whether either one is actually what their firm needs. The short version: both give you senior marketing leadership without a full-time salary attached, they just differ in how long the arrangement runs for. Below are the questions we get asked most often about fractional and interim CMOs, and where Ruche fits in.

What is a fractional CMO?

A fractional CMO is an experienced marketing leader who works with your firm for part of their time, a day a week, say, rather than five, while still operating at director level. You get senior strategic input, setting direction, shaping campaigns, overseeing junior staff, without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire. It suits firms that need more than administrative marketing support but aren’t yet ready for, or don’t need, someone in the office every day.

What's the difference between a fractional CMO and an interim CMO?

The difference is mainly about time. A fractional CMO is an ongoing arrangement, someone who works with you indefinitely on a part-time basis. An interim CMO is temporary, brought in to cover a specific gap: maternity or long-term leave, the notice period after someone leaves, or the search for a permanent hire. Both operate at the same senior level. It’s really just a question of how long you need them for.

Why do law firms and professional services firms use a fractional CMO?

Mostly because marketing has outgrown whoever’s currently responsible for it, but not enough to justify a full-time director-level salary yet. It’s common in firms with junior marketing staff who are good at delivery but haven’t been asked to set strategy, or firms where a partner has been making marketing decisions alongside their actual job. A fractional CMO gives direction without adding permanent headcount.

How much does a fractional CMO cost compared to hiring one full time?

A full-time CMO’s salary, once you add bonus, pension, recruitment and the rest, is a serious commitment, especially for medium to small firms. And, that’s before you’ve worked out whether there’s enough senior-level marketing work to justify it year-round.

A fractional arrangement means you’re paying for the time and expertise you actually need, which is usually a fraction of that cost.

Our retainers start from £600 a month, and are led by one of our experienced directors. That level of senior work forms part of it, if of course that’s the direction you want to take.

Can a fractional CMO work alongside an in-house marketing team?

They certainly can, and it’s actually one of the most common setups. A lot of the firms we work with have junior marketing staff who are capable on delivery, social media, content, campaigns, but haven’t had the strategic oversight to know where to focus that effort.

A fractional CMO sits above that, setting the plan and making sure the team’s time is going where it matters most.

Does Ruche offer a fractional CMO service?

Not as a separate, stand-alone offering, and honestly, we think that’s the right call. Every Ruche retainer is led personally by one of our two directors, Rachel Craig or Karen Macwee, and you dictate how you want us to spend our time. If that’s focussing more on the senior strategic input, that’s exactly what we’ll do. So basically, if what you’re really after is fractional CMO-level thinking, a retainer with Ruche already includes it.

How do you know if your firm needs a fractional CMO?

A few signs are worth paying attention to:

  • Marketing decisions are being made ad hoc by a partner who has no real time for it
  • Junior staff are producing content but nobody’s setting the strategy behind it
  • You know marketing needs to grow but aren’t sure what to prioritise first.

If any of that sounds familiar, it’s worth a conversation. We can talk through what’s actually needed before you commit to anything.
