What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)?

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of writing content that gives clear, direct answers to the questions people ask, so it’s more likely to be chosen as the answer in Google’s featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and AI Overviews, as well as voice assistants and AI tools. Our guide explains what you need to know.

You know more than anyone that your clients have questions, and often before they’ve even thought about which solicitor to instruct. How long does probate take? Do I need a solicitor to buy a house? What happens if I refuse a settlement agreement?

The way we search and find answers has changed in recent years, and most of us are now getting the answer without ever clicking on a website.

It might be a highlighted box at the top of Google, a spoken reply from a smart speaker or a summary written by AI. It doesn’t matter where they’ve got their answer from, someone’s content was chosen as the answer.

AEO is about making sure it’s yours. This guide explains what it is, why it matters for law firms and how to write content that answer engines want to use.

What answer engine optimisation means

An answer engine is anything that gives people a direct answer rather than a list of links. This includes:

  • Google’s featured snippets, the highlighted answer at the top of some results
  • People Also Ask, the expandable questions that appear partway down the page
  • Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • Voice assistants such as Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant
  • AI tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity

AEO grew up with featured snippets and voice search, long before AI tools went mainstream. The principle hasn’t changed, though: work out what people are asking, then answer it clearly enough that a machine is confident using your words.

How AEO fits with SEO and GEO

You’ll often see AEO mentioned alongside SEO  (search engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation). This is because they’re closely linked. There’s no hard line between them and work as a perfect strategy together.

  • SEO helps your pages rank in search results
  • AEO helps your content become the direct answer to a question
  • GEO helps AI tools understand, trust and cite your content

Google’s AI Overviews sit squarely in the overlap, so both AEO and GEO apply. In practice, a well-written page does all three jobs at once. That’s why we don’t think of them as separate tasks, just different reasons to write well.

Why it matters for law firms

Legal services are full of questions. Most potential clients start by trying to understand their situation before they decide whether they need a solicitor, and which one.

Many of those searches now end on the results page, without a click. That can sound like bad news, but it isn’t all bad. When your firm’s content is the answer, your name appears next to it, and you’ve helped someone at exactly the moment they needed it. That’s a strong first impression, and it builds the kind of trust that may lead to an enquiry later.

If a competitor’s content is chosen instead, they get that first impression.

How to write content that answer engines want to use

The good news is that AEO rewards the kind of clear, helpful writing that clients appreciate anyway. These are the principles we’d focus on.

1. Start with the questions your clients actually ask

Your fee earners hear the same questions every week, on the phone, in meetings and in emails. Those are your best starting point. Google’s People Also Ask boxes and keyword research tools can then show you how people phrase them and how often they’re searched.

Build a list for each practice area and keep adding to it.

2. Answer first, then explain

Put a short, direct answer immediately after the question, ideally in a sentence or two, then add the detail underneath. Answer engines look for a self-contained passage they can lift, and a clear opening answer gives them one.

Readers benefit too. Nobody wants to scroll through three paragraphs of background to find out whether they’re in the right place.

3. Be brave about “it depends”

It’s the lawyer’s favourite answer, and often the honest one. But an answer engine can’t do much with it. Give the general position first, then explain what it depends on.

For example, rather than saying the length of probate varies, say how long it typically takes, then explain what can make it quicker or slower.

4. Use questions as headings where they help

When a section answers a specific question, using that question as the heading makes it easy for both readers and answer engines to match the question to the answer. Use this where it’s genuinely helpful, rather than turning every heading into a question.

5. Match the format to the answer

Some answers work best as a short paragraph. Others suit a numbered list, such as the steps in a process, or a table, such as a comparison of options. Choosing the right format makes your answer easier to understand and easier to reuse.

6. Write the way people speak

People type and speak questions in everyday language, not legal terminology. Use plain English, explain any technical terms you do need and write as if you were answering the question across the desk.

This matters even more for voice search, where the answer is read aloud.

7. Keep answers accurate and up to date

Thresholds, fees, time limits and procedures change. An out-of-date answer can mislead a potential client and undermine trust in your firm, so review your key question-and-answer content regularly and show when it was last updated.

A note on FAQ schema

FAQ schema is code that labels the questions and answers on a page for search engines. It used to trigger expandable FAQ results in Google, but Google has since stopped showing those.

It does no harm to include it, and it may still help machines understand your content. But it’s no substitute for clear answers on the page itself, which is what answer engines actually use.

How to tell if AEO is working

AEO results are easier to spot than you might think. A practical routine is to:

  • Search your key client questions in Google and note whether your content appears as a featured snippet, in People Also Ask or in an AI Overview
  • Use Google Search Console to see which question-style searches your pages appear for, and how that changes over time
  • Ask the same questions in AI tools and voice assistants, and see which sources they use

Like most search work, AEO builds over time. Treat it as part of how you write every page, rather than a one-off project.

How we approach AEO at Ruche

You may have noticed this guide opens with short summary. That’s AEO in action: a short, direct answer to the question the page is about, before we go into detail.

We write every page for our clients the same way. We start with the questions their clients are asking, answer them clearly and build the detail around them, with SEO and GEO in mind at the same time.
