The importance of brand consistency

Why is brand consistency important?

Your brand is the way you distinguish your company, or your products or services, from others. When you develop a brand, you need to be consistent with your brand’s identity. It’s only by having brand consistency with your creative content, that your brand will grow and develop.

Think about one of your favourite brands, let’s take Apple as an example. Apple has numerous products that are regularly advertised, but you don’t necessarily need to see a logo to know it’s an Apple product. That’s because Apple has a unique brand identity, and they’re consistent with that brand identity with everything they do.

By keeping your brand consistent, it helps your audience know who you are as an organisation and this will help you improve:

  • Trust in your brand
  • Loyalty of your customers
  • Recognition of your brand
  • A positive perception of your brand

This will lead to more people using your services or buying your products.

How do you develop a brand's identity?

Many people believe that a brand’s identity is all about the logo. But that’s not actually the case. When you think about the identity of a person, you don’t just consider the way they dress. Even if they have their own unique style of clothing, that’s not their whole identity.

If you’re going to have brand consistency in everything you do, you need to develop your brand’s whole identity. You should first consider your values, your mission, and your vision. These act as the backbone of a brand’s identity, and all other aspects should mirror those. Other aspects you should then consider include:

  • Logo
  • Colour pallet
  • Graphics
  • Imagery
  • Fonts
  • Tone of voice
  • Writing style

Each of these aspects should have its own set of rules, and you should never waiver from them.

How do you maintain brand consistency?

It’s extremely important that you develop brand guidelines for your brand’s identity. This is a document that formally sets out all the dos and don’ts of your brand’s identity.

Having brand guidelines in place will help both you, your staff and external suppliers ensure brand consistency with all your creative content.
