It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the number of strategies a business needs in order to help them succeed. But, they’re also incredibly important. The marketing strategy you need will fully depend on what marketing you’re planning on doing. 

Basically, you’ll need a strategy for every element of your marketing. Here we break down how you should plan your strategies to make sure that every element is covered. 

1. Your Business Strategy

Your business strategy will come first. Every successful business will have an effective business strategy. It’s the plan that sets out your vision of how the business will look in the future. 

Basically, your business strategy should set out what you want to achieve in your business and how you’re going to get there. 

Once you know what your business needs to achieve, you can start building your marketing strategy.

2. Your Marketing Strategy

Your marketing strategy should identify what your business goals are, and what needs to be done in marketing to help achieve those goals.  

Your marketing strategy should set out all of the various marketing activities you plan to do, such as pay-per-click (PPC) or display activity, digital development, or content. It should set out what each area needs to achieve in order to achieve the overall marketing goals. 

3. Your Additional Marketing Strategies

Once you know which areas of marketing you need to achieve your overall marketing goals, you’ll need to build a strategy for each of those areas. 

Each strategy you prepare should have its own set of goals that align with the overall marketing strategy. 

Do you have to prepare a completely new strategy for each area?

It’s quite daunting when you think about the number of strategies you’ll need to prepare before you can even start working on your marketing activity. However, it doesn’t have to be as time-consuming as you first think. 

Each strategy will have a substantial amount of information from research that will assist the next. For example:

  • Each will have customer personas that can be adapted to ensure they cover all aspects of your marketing 
  • Each will have a SWOT analysis that can be adapted and amended for each area of your marketing
  • Each will have competitor research which can be used for each area of your marketing. 

Firms that only do a small amount of marketing, or only invest in one area of marketing, would combine these into one marketing strategy rather than having multiple additional marketing strategies.

Is a content strategy the most important marketing strategy?
