What is a Marketing Retainer and How Does it Work?
A marketing retainer is a fixed monthly fee that covers ongoing marketing work: strategy, content, social media and design, delivered by the same team every month rather than quoted project by project. At Ruche, retainers start from £600 a month and cover everything a firm needs from one team.
Retainer is one of those words that gets used constantly in marketing without much explanation attached to it. Strip away the jargon and it’s a simple idea: one fixed monthly fee, one team, and a plan that keeps moving forward rather than restarting from scratch every time something new comes up.
No renegotiating a contract every time you need a blog written or a campaign planned, no hunting round for quotes because last time’s freelancer has moved on, just people who already know your firm, quietly getting on with it.
Below are the questions we get asked most often about how that actually works, and what it means in practice for a law firm.
What does a marketing retainer include?
This varies from agency to agency, which is honestly part of the confusion. Some retainers cover a single channel (social media only, say), with everything else quoted separately as it comes up. Others are genuinely all in.
One retainer with Ruche covers the lot: marketing strategy, social media, email marketing, website management and content (including SEO, GEO and AEO), design, and support with Legal 500, Chambers and Partners and legal award submissions. You’re not stitching together five different suppliers and hoping they talk to each other. It’s one team, one plan, one monthly invoice.
What's the difference between a retainer and a one-off project?
A one-off project is a single piece of work with a clear end point, a website rewrite, say. A retainer works differently. It’s an ongoing monthly arrangement, delivered by the same team on a rolling basis, who get to know your firm properly rather than parachuting in once and disappearing. Most law firms find that suits them better, since marketing rarely stops at one project.
Who is a marketing retainer for?
Honestly, it depends where you’re starting from.
- If you’re a firm with no in-house marketing person, the retainer effectively becomes your marketing department.
- If you’re a firm with a marketing director or CMO but limited team capacity, a retainer adds the specialist skills you need without extra headcount.
- If you’re a firm with junior marketing staff but no senior oversight, a retainer provides direction as well as delivery.
Wherever you’re starting from, the underlying idea’s the same: consistent people and a plan to work to, rather than a fresh set of hands and a fresh explanation of your firm every time you need something done.
Is a retainer cheaper than hiring an in-house marketer?
Usually, yes. Once you count salary, pension contributions, recruitment, training, software and equipment, the cost of an in-house marketer can be significant. Also, it’s unlikely that one in-house hire can realistically cover all areas, such as strategy, social, email, content, design and directory submissions all at once, whereas a retainer gives you a team with those skills already, for one monthly fee.
How much does a marketing retainer cost?
This is the question everyone wants answered. In fairness, it depends on how hands-on you want your marketing agency to be. You may just want them to manage your monthly email marketing, or you may want them to manage your entire marketing function.
Retainers with Ruche start from £600 a month and are led by your goals and your budget. We’ll talk you through all of it, and you can request a trial run before you commit to anything.
Do I need a marketing strategy in place before signing up?
We can’t speak for all agencies on this, but with Ruche, the answer is no, and please don’t feel like you need to arrive with one. Agreeing the plan together is part of the first stage of working with us. All you really need is a sense of what you’re trying to achieve, we’ll help shape the rest.
Who will actually do the work?
This is definitely worth asking any agency up front. On some retainers, you sign with senior people and then get handed off to whoever’s free that month.
At Ruche, one of our directors, Rachel Craig or Karen Macwee, will be your account manager and your first point of contact, and will be consistently hands-on with the marketing produced. They stay properly involved in the accounts they lead, not just the pitch.
This is just one of the reasons why Ruche Marketing has won SME News Business Elite Awards for four years running, including Best Content Marketing Agency of the Year Manchester 2026, Best Legal and Professional Services Content Marketing Agency 2025, Content Marketing Agency of the Year North West 2024, and Best Content Marketing Agency Manchester 2023.
